Poetry – Happiest day of their lives

There was supposed to be a wedding at Alabama’s Spring Hill Baptist Church this weekend. Instead, the church held a funeral.

The bells for the bride’s entrance – instead a bold knell.

Her groom was meant to kiss her blushing face – instead a kiss farewell.

“It is finally wedding week!” he posted to his friends last Monday. This Monday he occupies a hospital bed whilst

he suffers head trauma and broken bones.

“Don’t wear white to a wedding!” they say.

Wear white for the funeral they won’t.

Happiest day of their lives.

Something old – the promise ring lost in the wreckage.

Something new – the sensation of being alone.

Something borrowed – his wedding attire for the funeral.

Something blue –the painted walls of the vacant nursery.
